Use of automatic pool covers on swimming pools

Automatic pool covers serve to help reduce operating costs by retaining heat, minimizing water loss due to evaporation, chemical use and keeping debris out of the pool. The tight-fitting nature of auto-covers causes heat buildup and do not allow for the escape of accumulating chlorine gasses between the waterline and cover. Coupled with the use of salt-chlorine generators which often constantly create chlorine, high levels of chlorine are concentrated in the water and chlorine gas above the water. This situation can lead to damage to the vinyl pool liner, causing premature pattern loss and water absorption leading to wrinkling. It is important that auto-covers be vented or opened on a daily basis to prevent this build up and possible liner damage.
